Leonardo DiCaprio has added his voice to the growing global debate around artificial intelligence and creativity, making it clear that while AI may assist filmmakers, it cannot replace human art.

Speaking in a recent interview reported by Variety, the Oscar-winning actor argued that AI-generated work lacks the emotional depth and lived experience that define meaningful storytelling. According to DiCaprio, art is inseparable from human intention, memory and feeling — elements no algorithm can truly replicate.

He acknowledged that AI can be useful as a tool in filmmaking, particularly for technical processes or visual experimentation, but drew a firm line between assistance and authorship. In his words, technology may speed things up, but it cannot originate genuine creative truth.

DiCaprio also expressed concern about the flood of AI-generated content online, noting that while some outputs may look impressive, they often fade quickly without cultural or emotional impact. For him, lasting art requires perspective, risk and vulnerability — qualities rooted in human experience.

His comments arrive at a moment when filmmakers worldwide, including across Africa, are navigating how to integrate new technologies without losing creative ownership. DiCaprio’s stance reinforces a widening industry consensus: AI can enhance cinema, but humanity remains its engine.
